Thomas J. Watson, Jr. succeeded his father at IBM, serving as chief executive of the company from 1956 to 1971. He was deeply involved in this fellowship program. In a 1992 interview with legendary journalist Walter Cronkite, Mr. Watson spoke about the benefits of travel and unfettered exploration.
